The Two Towers Reading & Discussion Night
November 1 , 2002

by Dennis Reulbach

Barnes & Noble Astor Place, in the heart of Greenwich Village, was the place to be on Friday night, November 1st. Members of Heren Istarion joined with friends from Gathering of the Fellowship for a night celebrating book two of Professor Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The night opened with an introduction to The Two Towers by Heren Istarion chairperson Anthony Burdge. A set of free LOTR pins, tattoos, and beautiful The Two Towers film posters, were given to all attendees.

A lively discussion ensued, with all of the participants discussing their views on Peter Jackson's adaptation of Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers from book to film. The discussion included topics ranging from casting decisions and screenplay adaptation to "missing scenes" and use of CGI enhancements. Our hopes and expectations for the second installment of Peter Jackson's films were expressed and shared.

After the dicussion we moved along to Tolkien Jeopardy, with 9 members of the audience partaking in 4 rounds of TTT trivia. Winners from the first three rounds advanced to the fourth and final round, until our grand prize winner, Mr. Matt Russo, was crowned as our Triumphant Troubador of Trivia. The grand prize was a Moria Orc bust provided by Sideshow Weta, with 2nd and 3rd place winners getting hardcover copies of The Lord of the Rings and The Art of The Fellowship of the Ring, respectively, compliments of Houghton Mifflin. Finalists also received a "Frodo Lives" T-shirt, while other participants won "Frodo Lives" baseball caps, compliments of New Line Cinema.

After the Barnes & Noble event came to an end, us die-hard Tolkien fans didn't want the evening to stop -- so we all went out to the Around The Clock Cafe at 8 Stuyvesant Street (near Third Avenue), for good conversation, good food, and good fellowship.

It is for just these types of events that this writer joined Heren Istarion. If you love the works of
J.R.R. Tolkien, and like discussing them with others, then please join us for our future events
in and around the New York City area.
