An
announcement from the Tolkien Society UK:
The Tolkien
Society wishes to announce to the world Tolkien Reading Day!
25th March 2003
25th March is to be "Tolkien Reading Day",
an event aimed at encouraging the use of Tolkien’s works in education
and to get schoolteachers and library staff to participate in
reading Tolkien to their classes and in their libraries. 25th
March already has a significance to Tolkien’s readers, as it is
the day of the Downfall of Sauron at the conclusion of the ‘War
of the Ring’ in "The Lord of the Rings".

EDUCATION PAGES LAUNCHED ON THE INTERNET
Tied into the Tolkien Reading Day event
is the recent completion of the Education Section within the Society’s
website www.tolkiensociety.org/ed/index.html
which Tolkien fans in education (pupils and teachers)
can use to assist learning and teaching. The pages can be downloaded
and printed off free of charge by educationalists. Please note
the texts on these pages are copyright of the Tolkien Society
and East Lothian Museums. The Education pages comprise a range
of ideas for teachers of Citizenship at Key Stage one (infants)
using "The Father Christmas Letters", to ideas for university
lecturers working on Middle English texts like "Sir Gawain
and the Green Knight". Some of the information has been developed
from our responses to questions the Society has been sent by schoolchildren
from around the world. Many other questions fit better in the
Frequently Asked Questions section and so have been left
where they are easy to find.

BE
PART OF A WEB DOCUMENTARY ABOUT TOLKIEN FANS!
Tolkien fan Susan Jacobson will be videotaping interviews with fans
of The Lord of the Rings about their connection to Tolkien's story
for her online documentary - Countless Stories from Fans of The
Lord of the Rings (http://countlessstories.com)
at the Streaming Cinema 3 festival in Philadelphia on February 21-23.
Countless Stories is a dynamic documentary engine that combines
RTSP video streaming with database technologies to create documentaries
that assemble themselves on the fly, based on input from the Internet
audience. The Countless Stories engine is being developed as part
of Susan's dissertation project at New York University.
The Streaming Cinema 3.0 festival is going to feature some very
interesting work - multi-screen films, a Flash animation contest,
and a live, multi-site interactive film called Story Streams. The
event is organized by a very cool woman named Nora Barry who has
served on many judging panels for Web cinema, including the Cannes
panel. Information about dates and tickets can be found here:

On
February 4th in the Post Standard of Syracuse NY an interesting
article was published by journalist Sean Kirst entitled "War
of the Ring" concerning the changes in The Two Towers.
Our own Jan Galkowski was one of the Tolkienists interviewed for
this piece.
In December the ladies of Barnes and Noble Astor Place, Catherine
and Laurie had to unfortunately cancel the Beowulf reading. Fortunately
it has been rescheduled for February 21st 730pm in the Barnes and
Noble Astor Place event space. We will be reading the Seamus Heaney
version of the Anglo Saxon Epic, plus if time permits hopefully
discussing the recent publication of Beowulf and the Critics by
Professor Tolkien, edited by Professor Michael Drout, a recent guest
signed to the Gathering
of the Fellowship.

Today
America lost the Space Shuttle Columbia and its crew. It is with
deep sorrow and pain the Staff of Heren Istarion offers the surviving
families its condolences. Also in our memories and prayers are those
families who lost loved ones in the Challenger disaster 17 years
ago this week. We all have our stories as to where we were then
and now. Ultimately, the tales of the ones lost are what we should
remember.
