The Maps of Tolkien's Middle-earth
By Brian Sibley and John Howe

A review by Anthony S Burdge

As I looked upon the slipcase for The Maps of Tolkien's Middle-earth for the first time my mind instantly recalled Bilbo's recitation of The Road goes ever on and a smile came across my face. The front of the case shows an open door to Bag End, an inside perspective, and the road down from the doorway. This is the perfect design to such a piece of inspirational art and education on the lands of Middle-earth.

The Maps of Tolkien's Middle-earth is an enlightening and lovely combination of textual description of the lands of Middle-earth, by Brian Sibley, and its companion of awe-inspiring visual representation by John Howe. Those who know the work and are fans of both author and artist are not let down. This set assists us in revisiting Middle-earth and to become just as enchanted with the world as first time travelers.

Brian Sibley gives a detailed look at Tolkien history and the influences that played a role in helping Tolkien create Middle-earth. Each map has specific information and details for the regions explored in John Howe's work. John Howe's brilliant paintings bring out the heart of Tolkien's love and labor for his own maps and honors his spirit in the depiction. The Unexpected dwarven party from The Hobbit is captured marvelously as well as the rendering of landscapes that helped inspire Howe's paintings i.e. Cape Forostar in New Zealand provided him with reference points for the Numenor map while working on the Lord of the Rings films.

If you wish to be re-enchanted and enlightened more on the subject of Tolkien, the landscapes of Middle-earth or to travel there and back again, then you must obtain The Maps of Tolkien's Middle-earth
